Alex Ovechkin Reacts To Capitals' Splashy Additions, Rumors On Future Emerge

There's a lot of debate around hockey about what the impact of the big splashy trade additions the Washington Capitals made this week will have on Alex Ovechkin's future. Some say that adding Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou is an obvious nod to the fact that Ovi will be retiring, and the Caps need to replace his missing offense.

But a quote from head coach Spencer Carbery could fuel hopes that it means the opposite, and Ovechkin would be excited about coming back and joining those guys.

“I spoke to him this morning,” Carbery told 106.7 The Fan’s Grant and Danny.
“He’s on vacation with his family and doing some working out there… He did mention and say today that he’s following and seeing the moves and was really happy for the organization about acquiring Jordan and Alex.”

Barry Svrluga wrote in The Athletic on Friday that he also believes that Ovi will be inspired by the Capitals' moves to come back for a 22nd NHL season at age 41.

"Before he departed (on his summer vacation), he indicated to the team — from owner Ted Leonsis to president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan to general manager Chris Patrick — that he was keenly interested in what the Caps could and would do to upgrade a roster that barely missed the playoffs last season.

"Those upgrades: How about Alex Tuch to play left wing and Jordan Kyrou to play right wing — each on one of the top two lines?...

"How’s that sound, Ovi? Like a team in win-now mode?...

"The aggressiveness MacLellan and Patrick have shown makes Ovechkin more likely to play another year... With two splashy trades, the Capitals made their roster more prepared for the playoffs — which makes their situation more appealing for the best player in their history."

As for when the legendary all-time NHL goal-scoring king will make that decision, there's nothing official. But there was a report out of Russia Friday morning that a date could be set where he'll make the announcement.

No one on this side of the pond has confirmed that report just yet. But it would be safe to assume that we'll definitely have an answer at least by that date at the latest, July 25th. And possibly sooner.
