After a dismal 2025-26 campaign, the Canucks have made changes behind the bench and in the front office, and now the attention turns to the ice. Reports have surfaced stating the Canucks are in trade talks on Elias Pettersson, and the team is open to retaining salary to facilitate a deal.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun recently commented on Pettersson's future and showcased just how far along the Canucks really are with talks:

“I’ve talked to some teams over the last few days that say (Pettersson)’s definitely available,” LeBrun said. “So is (Brock) Boeser, obviously so is (Jake) DeBrusk. The Canucks, you know, they want to tear it all down, to continue the rebuild. But Pettersson, that salary. The Canucks would have to be willing to retain, which I think they are. Which is a huge commitment, by the way, given all the years left on that deal … But even then, I talked to a team today that said, we just don’t know if we can get him back to a certain level, even at a rebate. So, I mean, bottom line is yes, the Canucks have talked to teams and they’re willing to move him. But I just don’t know if they can.”

Pettersson will enter his third season of an eight-year agreement with an AAV of 11.6 million. He owns a full no-movement clause and for now, it hasn't been leaked on where exactly he'd be open to playing next season, and beyond.

As far as potential trade destinations, the Carolina Hurricanes were hot on Pettersson's heels last season, but are likely out. The San Jose Sharks are a team to consider, but it's more likely the Canucks move Pettersson east, with the Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings teams to consider.
