NHL Free Agency: Bobby McMann Linked to Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, but the fact of the matter is, not only will their coaching staff look different next season, so will their roster.
General manager Stan Bowman's leash isn't super long, so it will be important for the Oilers exec to hit some home runs this summer, including on the free-agent market, which opens July 1. The Oilers will try to make a move or two to free up some cap space, and expect to see them land a couple of wingers who can play within their top-nine.
One free-agent forward who has been floating around as a possibility for the Oilers is Bobby McMann. The speedy winger spent last season split between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Seattle Kraken, and brings a ton of speed, size, and finishing ability to the lineup. With McMann's speed and forechecking abilities, he'd look great on the left wing of Connor McDavid.
Daily Faceoff's Matt Larkin recently commented on the Oilers' plans, and sees McMann as a fit:
In terms of ideal matchmaking, it’s not the most exciting, but I just want to be realistic. The one I’ve been thinking about is from the free agent market, and it’s Bobby McMann to the Edmonton Oilers. They need, I think, size; they need someone who’s big, but also really fast. He’s coming off a 29-goal season, and I just think that would really spruce up the forward core. I know you’re kind of buying high, and he’s not nearly as young as people think. He turns 30 [in June], but that doesn’t matter for an Oilers team that desperately wants to win now. So, I actually really would like to see someone like that, joining the Oilers in the top six or top nine.
Will McMann head to Edmonton? What about a reunion in Toronto? McMann finished this past season with 29 goals and 46 points, there's certainly going to be a bidding war taking place in a few weeks.
