Pittsburgh Penguins & Seattle Kraken In Advanced Trade Talks
The Shane Wright sweepstakes continue in Seattle.
The Penguins are intrigued by the idea of trading for Seattle Kraken center Shane Wright, sources told The Athletic's Josh Yohe. The Penguins have been trying to find young players entering their prime for the past two offseasons, as Kyle Dubas knows his core that includes Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, are not going to be Penguins forever.
Wright is coming off a rough season in which he scored just 12 goals and 27 points in 74 games. In 2024-25, he set career highs of 19 goals and 44 points in 79 appearances. It's been quite the interesting story so far throughout his career, as he went from consensus No.1 pick, to falling in the draft, to now having an organization give up on him.
According to multiple reports, the Kraken have made it known around the league they are interested in moving out the former No.4 overall pick. Wright's development hasn't been what was expected of him in Seattle to this point, and the organization wants to give him a fresh start. Insert the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It's likely the Penguins are offering Rickard Rakell in trade talks, but with his 8-team no-trade list, there's potential that Seattle could make his no-fly list. The Pens would have to include an NHL ready prospect and a high draft pick, as just Rakell on his own won't be enough to get the Kraken to cave.
If the Penguins don't land Wright, don't be surprised if they make a splash to acquire either Elias Pettersson from Vancouver, or Jason Robertson from Dallas.
