Dominic James Named Tampa Bay Lightning's Next Breakout Candidate

The Chicago Blackhawks foolishly let a future NHL player slide through the ranks, as the Tampa Bay Lightning scooped up forward Dominic James. GM Julien Brisebois of the Lightning would sign him to a two-year, entry-level contract that expires at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. 

Of course, James wasn't willing to sign in Chicago, which begs the question: how well was GM Kyle Davidson managing his prospect pool? Not well enough.

James made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 24th, 2025, and would spend 43 games with the big club. 

The two prospects thrived under head coach Jon Cooper's system, with James making a small but discernible impact, scoring 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in 43 games. James would suffer an unfortunate injury resulting in his placement on IR and being out 8-10 weeks after being boarded by the Buffalo Sabres' Michael Kesselring. 

 James played his best hockey centering forwards Oliver Bjorkstrand and Gage Concalves for 10 games which the trio combined for an xGF% of 68.60 and 4  goals for and 2 goals against. 

It appears James could continue his breakout in the NHL if he finds comparable chemistry in Jon Cooper's system he found playing on the same line as those two. 

Breakouts aren't a given in the NHL, and regression is all too common. Can he capitalize upon his opportunity in Tampa Bay next season?
