Legendary Flames Radio Personality Passes Away Tragically At The Age of 79

The Calgary Flames announced the passing of legendary radio personality Peter Maher at the age of 79 on Thursday. 

Maher has been with the franchise since its inception in Atlanta in 1980 and moved with the team to Calgary. He'd call games for the franchise up until 2013-14, retiring after 33 years in the role. 

Maher was the voice of the Flames during multiple Stanley Cup runs in 1989 and 2014. 

His trademark calls became a part of fans' hockey slang, synonymous with the franchise. 

Maher's trademark calls of “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” became a staple for Calgary hockey fans over the years.

It is with deep regret and sadness that the Calgary Flames organization acknowledge the passing of Peter Maher, the legendary voice of the Flames.

Maher received the Foster Hewitt Award in 2006 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame that same year, enshrining his legacy in the sport forever. 

The Flames honored his contribution to the club's legacy by giving him a spot in the Scotiabank Saddledome, with the "Peter Maher Broadcast Booth". While the team gives out an award in his namesake, the "Peter Maher Award", to the player who upholds his values of sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect. 

No details were given about what caused his passing. 

Maher, a Campbellton, N.B., native, was born on Nov. 11th, 1946.
