Oilers confirm 4 players to miss training camp

The Edmonton Oilers will be a little light on troops for training camp next month. After a report earlier in the day, the team has confirmed that forwards Mattias Janmark & Matt Savoie, defenceman Alec Regula and a newcomer between the pipes, goaltender Frederik Andersen, all will not participate in camp.

All four players have been placed on injured reserve.

Savoie and Andersen have struggled with injuries in the past, yet this news still catches us off guard, as both were injured in off-season training.

Ryan Rishaug reported later in the day that Savoie and Andersen could be available by late October, which, if true, could see them missing about the first 12 games of the season.

Janmark is still recovering from season-ending surgery in March, while Regula is not yet recovered from a procedure shortly after the season finished. A number of injuries derailed much of his 2025-26 season.

The team says it will provide updates on each player’s availability "when appropriate".

Savoie and Andersen the most concerning of four players who will not participate in training camp for Oilers

The losses of Savoie and Andersen are the most concerning, since both were expected to take on important roles with the team. It was hoped that the veteran Andersen would stabilize a goaltending situation that was in flux all last season. He is coming off a Stanley Cup triumph with the Carolina Hurricanes, after leading the team on a big playoff run into the Finals, before surrendering the starting role in net to Brandon Bussi for the last few games.

Savoie is one of the team's top young players, and was being counted on to take a big step forward after his 18-goal rookie season last year. He had the inside track on lining up once again on the top line with Connor McDavid.
