Capitals Sign Ryan Leonard To Huge Extension

Ryan Leonard quickly proved to the Washington Capitals that he had the potential to live up to his 8th overall pick billing, scoring 20 goals in a terrific rookie season. Now, he becomes one of the last players in NHL history to secure an eight-year extension, and at a huge number.

The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Ryan Leonard to an eight-year, $84 million contract extension. Leonard’s contract will carry an average annual value of $10.5 million.

 It's an $84 million deal, with a shocking $10.5 million AAV for the 21-year-old. He still has one year to run on his entry-level deal. The extension kicks in for the 2027-28 season. 

Leonard posted 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in just 14:25 average ice time per night, while earning himself a spot on the top power play unit. The 6'1", 205-pound forward also delivered 124 hits.

He started the season well, but finished even stronger, posting 10 goals and 15 points through the final 20 games of the season, and finished eighth in Calder Trophy balloting. 

The Caps made Leonard the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
