Red Wings Make Drastic Move With Dylan Larkin

The Detroit Red Wings haven't traded Dylan Larkin yet, despite his request after last season. But they have made a significant move heading into training camp next week. The Wings have stripped Larkin of his captaincy.

Nevertheless, Larkin has confirmed that he will report to camp, and from the sounds of it, could be reconsidering his trade demand. He says he will "talk further about the direction of the team" with the new hockey operations boss, whenever that person is finally in place. 

Both Larkin and the team have released statements on the new development. 

"The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named," the team said in its statement. "Any further discussions or decisions will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place.

"Dylan is under contract as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Any conversations regarding the future with the Club will take place privately when a new hockey operations leader has been named."

Larkin's statement reads as follows:

"Over the past couple weeks, Red Wings leadership and I have had several in-depth discussions. I've appreciated those candid conversations, and I will be at training camp with my teammates," said Larkin. "When new leadership is in place, we'll talk further about the direction of this team. We will keep those conversations private, and I will keep my focus on the guys in that room."

 Larkin asked for a trade at the end of last season, and reportedly gave the Wings only three or four teams that he would accept. None of those teams have been willing or able to come up with a suitable trade package. 

Besides, Detroit hasn't had a GM in place since Steve Yzerman was relieved of his duties back in mid-July. 

Larkin has been the team's captain since 2021. He still has five years remaining on his $69.6 million contract, with an $8.7M AAV. He owns a full no-trade clause.
