2 Calgary Flames Named Prime Trade Candidates

The Calgary Flames are likely going to finish dead last in the NHL this season, and general manager Craig Conroy is tasked with another fire sale. There's certainly multiple trade assets to consider for the Flames, as Daily Faceoff's Mike Gould recently mentioned to keep an eye on a couple Flames.

Gould lists Morgan Frost and Zach Whitecloud as the two players most likely to be dealt this season. Frost is a pending unrestricted free agent, who is certainly going to be appealing to contending teams, looking for some more depth down the middle of their middle-six. Frost has already been linked to the Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks, so it will be interesting to see what the Flames can get for his services. Frost has posted two goals and in six games this season, and is owed $4.3 million AAV. He also has an eight-team no-trade clause on his contract.

The other prime candidate is Whitecloud, a rugged defenceman, who plays an in-your-face, stay-at-home type of physical game. Whitecloud is a great penalty killer, he doesn't mind sacrificing his body blocking shots, and he's been on the radar of a few teams already this season, including the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whitecloud is under contract through next season at $2.7 million, and doesn't own any trade protection.

Their most coveted player might be Zach Whitecloud, who has become a highly sought-after veteran around the league in less than a calendar year after essentially being a throw-in to make the Andersson trade work. Whitecloud is immensely popular in the Calgary community and is signed for another season after this one, so there’s no urgency for the Flames to move him if the offers don’t meet a certain standard....Frost would make a lot of sense as a third-line center and power-play weapon for a contender. Considering how shallow the current center market is, Frost could conceivably fetch a pretty hefty return for the Flames.
