It was a rough weekend for the New York Islanders on the injury front. They've lost both Cal Ritchie and Matias Maccelli for multi-week periods.

Ritchie, the second-year forward, is out four-to-six weeks, after being injured early in the first period of the Isles' game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. A hit against the glass from Nick Blankenburg left Ritchie in obvious pain, after just :28 seconds of ice time for the youngster.

Initially, it appeared that an upper-body injury could be the result, but the Islanders have confirmed a lower-body injury. Indeed, Ritchie appeared to be favoring his left leg while skating over to the bench.

This is the third lower-body injury for the 21-year-old since the beginning of last season.

Maccelli's ugly-looking leg injury will keep him on the shelf for several weeks

As for newcomer Maccelli, his injury looked uglier as his left leg folded awkwardly under him as he tried to change direction while skating out from behind the net.

Maccelli had been off to a nice start with his new team, with six points in eight games and a +3 rating.

They'll join top-line center Mat Barzal on the shelf. He has been out for the early part of this season while recovering from an aggravation of a prior left-knee injury and inflammation that flared up right before training camp.
