NHLTR Mock Trade: Red Wings' Simon Edvinsson To The Blues

Social Media Feature Preview

Simon Edvinsson is a top-four defenseman in the Detroit Red Wings organization. A deal should've been done prior to owner Chris Ilitch demoting long-time general manager Steve Yzerman, as he prioritized handicapping the team before signing a dedicated player like Edvinsson.

The Swedish-born blueliner is one of many in a long line of potential Swedes who have made names for themselves not only in the NHL, but wearing the Red Wings crest, if we go back to Nicklas Lidstrom, who had the game of hockey down to a science, but unlike his counterpart, was a late-round draft pick who never had the same kind of hype surrounding him as Edvinsson had until later in his career.

Despite Edvinsson's pedigree, the team has prolonged the situation of signing the former 6th overall pick in 2021. Interim GM Horcroff made a statement that signing him was of the utmost priority on Oct. 14th, yet five days have passed, and we've not seen progress, aside from Edvinsson heading back to North America on his dime and practicing in his gear with the Colgate Women's Hockey team.

Mock Trade: Simon Edvinsson to the St. Louis Blues

Edvinsson is a first-round pick who has played 175 games in the NHL and plays a two-way game on the blueline. While not purely a defensive defenseman, he's scored 60 points (19 goals, 41 assists) and has shown prowess with his skating capabilities and his shot.

He's exceeded expectations being placed alongside RHD Moritz Seider last season, scoring 31 points in 78 games on the top pair. He can play a solid defensive game and isn't afraid to get physical, along with his silky-smooth hands and ability to thread the needle. If Interim GM Horcroff does fail to sign him before December, could we expect the worst? This is speculation, as he was linked to the Blues on Oct. 13th, by The Fourth Period.

What could the Red Wings expect to get for him?

Utilizing another model by Ryan Pawlowski, the Blues could package an NHL defenseman, such as Brandon Carlo, plus a 2027 fifth-round pick, Adam Jiricek, and Otto Stenberg in return for one of the best emerging blueliners in the NHL. Keep in mind that the Blues would need Edvinsson to sign an extension before agreeing to this kind of payment to Detroit.
