'Jabs going back & forth' as Red Wings' Edvinsson leaves town amidst contract impasse

The situation surrounding unsigned RFA Simon Edvinsson is starting to deteriorate in the Motor City. According to insider David Pagnotta, things are getting a bit testy as the Detroit Red Wings & Edvinsson's camp continue to jostle over the terms for a new contract.

We've learned that Edvinsson has left Detroit, and headed overseas.

"Today we find out he's skating with Frolunda, his old club team in Sweden. Uh-oh. That's a bomb," Jeff Marek pointed out to Pagnotta on the DFO Insider.

"That's not good. That's not good," Pagnotta said.

"They had what was described to me as a pretty low offer for Simon Edvinsson, and that didn't exactly sit super well with the player... It was pretty low, surprisingly."

How low? Compared to the recent Zeev Buium $9.38M AAV deal from Vancouver, Edvinsson's offer coming from Detroit was "not even in that stratosphere. Not even close. Not even close to that. I'd say less than half on an AAV."

Pagnotta also even discussed with Marek that an offer sheet from another team is not out of the question at this point.
The offer sheet territory is interesting because there are teams that would love to get their hands on this kid. There are a lot of teams that are looking to shore up their blueline. I don't think there's been a formal trade request, but there's been a few jabs tossed back and forth.

For Detroit, there are teams that are looking to bolster their blue line to a degree, whether it's Boston or St. Louis or whomever that have the resources to pull something like that off both financially and compensationally.

Marek agreed, stating, "I'm having a hard time believing that there aren't teams out there right now ... (saying) 'Can we use offer sheets to get Simon Edvinsson here?'"

Pagnotta insists it would take an offer in the range of about an $11 million AAV to get Edvinsson signed (whether that be a rival team, or the Red Wings themselves).

Can Detroit get all the way up from their previous 'lowball' offer to that high-end range?

For now, Edvinsson is sticking close to home in Sweden while his agent continues 'tossing those jabs' with the Wings.
