Stars Set Timeline For Jason Robertson's Contract Talks
“I’m going to wait until probably around the first of December,” Nill told NHL.com’s Tracey Myers, adding, “I don’t want any distraction.”
Robertson signed a one-year, $12 million contract on July 21 to avoid arbitration, and he can’t sign a long-term deal until January 1, 2027.
How They Got Here
Dallas appeared ready to part ways with Robertson in June before a potential trade with Seattle fell apart when he rejected an eight-year contract at a cap hit of roughly $15 million.
Elliotte Friedman later reported the Stars held “pretty legitimate talks” with Pittsburgh about a trade, and Robertson ended up re-signing for one year.
Tom Gazzola: Re Jason Robertson/Stars: The way that the negotiations went over the summer, that didn't damage the relationship...? David Pagnotta: I don't think so, no, he still wants to stay, and they still wanna keep him - Tom Gazzola Show (10/20)

Robertson is 27 and tied for fourth in the NHL with 45 goals in 82 games last season, and he has three goals and 11 points in 10 games this year as Dallas has started 6-3-1.
Nill isn’t changing course, since he said on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio before the season, “I anticipate we’ll start negotiations sometime in December here.”
Robertson said Saturday that at the start of the season “all I can think about is getting the season going, getting a rhythm,” adding, “I think after 20 games is when you start to understand.”
What Dallas Has To Work With
Robertson becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer if he doesn’t sign, and the maximum contract term is now seven years instead of eight.
Dallas is set to have just under $35 million in cap space next season with eight roster spots to fill, per PuckPedia, and both Robertson’s $12 million hit and Tyler Seguin’s $9.85 million hit come off the books.
