Bruins Trying To Move $9 Million Defenseman

Boston Bruins defenseman Henri Jokiharju declined to say whether he has requested a trade, according to the Boston Globe, a few weeks after Elliotte Friedman reported that Boston is trying to find him a new home.

Asked by a Globe reporter last Thursday if he and fellow waived Bruin Mikey Eyssimont have asked for trades, Jokiharju said, “It’s just, you know, if you ask most people that question, they’ll go in one direction.”

Eyssimont said, “I’m not focused on anything but my game and playing,” and both politely declined to comment on whether they’ve requested a trade.

Boston Is Still Trying To Move Him

Friedman spoke in his first 32 Thoughts of the season on September 29 that “Boston is trying to find a new home for Henri Jokiharju, who cleared waivers.”

The Bruins placed him on waivers September 27, he cleared the next day, and he was assigned to Providence, with rookie Frederic Brunet ahead of him on the blue line.

Jokiharju is 27, a right-shot defenseman who played for Finland at the Olympics in February, and he had two goals and 13 assists in 42 games for Boston last season.

His contract is the complication, since he signed a three-year, $9 million deal that carries a $3 million cap hit through 2027-28, which leaves two years at $3 million left.

Conor Ryan of Boston.com wrote the Bruins might have to attach a low draft pick or seek little in return, and the team has enough cap space not to be hurt in the meantime.

Boston signed right-shot defensemen Will Borgen and Connor Clifton this offseason, which squeezed Jokiharju out.

Jokiharju and Eyssimont have combined for 729 NHL games and went to Hershey for back-to-back AHL games over the weekend.

Nothing has been reported on a trade being close, and Jokiharju remains with Providence.
