Flames' Asking Price For Maple Leafs Trade Target Emerges
Pagnotta spoke on The Leafs Morning Take, saying, “Maybe it’s a first-round pick and a lower prospect or whatever. But it’s not a low price for Zach Whitecloud because of his capabilities and also the cap hit factoring in.”
Why The Price Is High
Whitecloud is 29, a right-shot shutdown defenseman who won the Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023, and he carries a $2.75 million cap hit through 2027-28.
Calgary acquired him in January in the Rasmus Andersson trade, along with prospect Abram Wiebe and conditional first- and second-round picks, so the Flames paid a high price to get him, and he’s playing on their top pair.
David Pagnotta think Calgary’s ask for Zach Whitecloud would be something like an (A-) prospect, a high draft pick or a combination of the two. - @TheFourthPeriod #NHL #Flames https://t.co/4ycBeeKoAK

Obviously, if another team were willing to meet Calgary’s price, the Flames would have dealt him already, and a very high ask helps explain why nothing has happened yet.
Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco reported earlier this month that Flames sources didn’t sound like they were in a rush to move him, and that his veteran presence on a young blue line could make the asking price even higher.
Pagnotta reported that the Maple Leafs have held exploratory discussions involving Whitecloud and said on Daily Faceoff LIVE that it “wouldn’t surprise me at all” if Toronto escalated its conversations with Calgary.
The Fourth Period has also linked Toronto to Detroit’s Simon Edvinsson and Carolina’s Alexander Nikishin, so Whitecloud would be a cheaper and more defensive option under new GM John Chayka.
He has the most suitors of the three Flames players who have come up in trade talk, Pagnotta said, along with Morgan Frost and Connor Zary.
