Canadiens Could Face Major Trade Decision On Kaiden Guhle

The Montreal Canadiens’ young defensemen are playing well enough that Kaiden Guhle or, eventually, Mike Matheson could end up being pushed out, according to Sportsnet’s Frank Seravalli.

Seravalli wrote that Montreal needs to think about the roles Adam Engstrom, David Reinbacher, and perhaps Luke Mittelstadt will play, and that any of them could be traded if needed, but that their performances could instead lead to a veteran leaving.

A Crowded Blue Line

Mittelstadt has stood out on Laval’s blue line, with 15 points in just nine games, and Reinbacher was sent down September 27 after a strong preseason, with Seravalli also noting that scouts view Engstrom as one of the best defensemen without a fully defined NHL role.

Seravalli wrote that the start from some of Montreal’s young players has the Canadiens internally weighing how aggressive to be on the trade market, and that top prospect Michael Hage remains unavailable.

He also suggested rival teams may have misread Montreal’s run to the Eastern Conference Final as a sign the club is in win-now mode, and he speculated the next addition could be a stabilizing veteran similar to last season’s Phillip Danault pickup.

The Canadiens are 5-3-2, and they’ve pitched Detroit on being added to Dylan Larkin’s trade list and previously competed hard for Kirill Marchenko.

The Contracts Involved

Guhle, the 16th overall pick in 2020, signed a six-year, $33.3 million extension in July 2024 with a $5.55 million cap hit through 2030-31, and his modified no-trade clause with a five-team list doesn’t begin until 2029-30.

Matheson signed a five-year, $30 million extension that runs through 2030-31 and carries a $6 million cap hit and a full no-move clause, so he’d have to approve any deal, but he seems less likely to be dealt.
