Mammoth Hint Another Blockbuster Trade Could Be Coming

The Utah Mammoth already made some of the NHL's biggest additions in the offseason.

According to GM Bill Armstrong, that doesn't mean he's done.

Armstrong told RG.org he believes Utah has crossed the line from rebuilding into legitimate playoff contender, and he's not planning to sit still if another opportunity comes along. "If something comes up, certainly we have the assets to go after that piece," Armstrong said. "We've been aggressive in the past, and we're going to continue to be aggressive."

A Roster Already Reshaped By Major Trades

Armstrong acquired defenseman MacKenzie Weegar from Calgary for three second-round picks, then brought in center Vincent Trocheck from the New York Rangers this past offseason, sending Sean Durzi, Cole Beaudoin, and a 2027 third-round pick the other way.

He also added veteran forward Anders Lee in free agency.

Utah opened this season in dominant fashion too, blowing out Chicago 6-0 on Thursday, with all three of the offseason's new additions making immediate, noticeable impacts in the win.

Building Around A Young Core First

Armstrong has been careful to speak on the aggression as building on top of a foundation, not instead of one.

Utah locked up both Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther to long-term extensions before turning its attention outward, viewed internally as the two foundational players the rest of the roster gets built around.

"For Armstrong, those deals were not simply about avoiding difficult negotiations down the road with a rapidly rising cap," one recent piece on the team's offseason strategy explained. "They were about establishing certainty around the players Utah believes will lead the club for years."

With Cooley and Guenther locked in, Armstrong has freedom to keep spending remaining assets on win-now additions rather than worrying about retaining his own core pieces.
