The Florida Panthers have been waiting with bated breath for days now for an update on the severity of captain Aleksander Barkov's knee injury. The news is now in: Six to eight weeks, per insider Darren Dreger.

Barkov has opted not to undergo surgery for the injury to his left knee, and will instead take on a non-surgical rehab program. This news is better than expected for the Panthers, who had to play the entire 2025-26 season without their superstar two-way top-line center. For now, it appears that he could return by the end of November.

Head coach Paul Maurice says this is the most likely timeline, although it "could be a little less, could be a little more.”

The 31-year-old suffered the injury during an awkward fall in a preseason game five days ago.

Barkov tore his ACL and MCL on the first day of training camp last year, had surgery the next day and missed the entire 2025-26 season.

"It was a difficult thing to go through last year," Maurice said. "We've been through it, so we'll just deal with it."

The Panthers captain is a three-time Selke winner as the top defensive forward in the NHL, and is widely regarded as the top two-way center in hockey. He's recorded a plus/minus rating of +124 in his 12+ year career, along with 286 goals and 782 points in 806 games.
