Report: Islanders Close to Trading RHD Scott Mayfield
Scott Mayfield can’t make his way into the New York Islanders’ lineup on a consistent basis and it appears the veteran defender’s tenure on Long Island might soon come to an end. Mayfield, who turned 34 last week, is in the fourth year of a seven-year, $24.5 million contract. He also owns a full no-trade clause this season, which switches to a 16-team no-trade list next season.
He has been limited to just two games so far this season and is not expected to suit up Tuesday evening when the Islanders host the Anaheim Ducks. While Mayfield has not requested a trade, to date, there is growing belief that such an ask may come if the team continues to sit him up in the press box.
Mayfield is a rugged defenceman, who loves to play a physical style. His skating has always been in question, and his hockey sense, but if a team needs a bottom-pair, stay-at-home defender, Mayfield is a solid choice.
The 34-year-old has some term left on his contract, so this won't be the easiest trade to pull off. Mayfield's owed $3.5 million AAV for three more seasons, and owns a no-trade clause, so he has all the say in the matter. Mayfield, however, wants to play, so if it means there's a better opportunity for him elsewhere, word is he'll strongly consider it.
The Islanders signed Logan Stanley just as the season was starting, and he's played very well, moving up to top-pair minutes, which has certainly pushed Mayfield down the depth chart.
