Flames' $5 Million Veteran Forward Could Be Next To Go

Calgary Flames center Ryan Strome is a more likely trade candidate than Zach Whitecloud or Morgan Frost, according to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, who spoke to GM Craig Conroy about several veterans on October 26.

Conroy praised how Strome has fit in since Calgary acquired him from Anaheim at last year’s deadline, but said his case will take some time to evaluate, with a decision coming before the March 1 deadline.

Why Strome Stands Out

Strome is 33, carrying a $5 million cap hit on an expiring contract, and has four points in 12 games this season.

He’s someone the Flames are quite likely to move by the deadline, and Calgary is expected to be sellers in another rebuilding season.

Whitecloud, 29, has told Conroy he wants to be part of the long-term solution, and the GM is reluctant to part with his experience.

He’s signed through 2027-28 at a $2.75 million cap hit and is averaging more than 20 minutes a game, so it would take a significant offer for Calgary to move him.

The Frost Factor

Frost, 27, has a $4.375 million cap hit that expires this summer, and LeBrun reported Tuesday on TSN that Conroy met with his agent, Darren Ferris, to get extension talks started.

Since arriving in Calgary, Strome has recorded seven goals and 16 total points across 31 games played. He was acquired from the Ducks in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2027.
