After a tumultuous offseason for Dylan Larkin, in which he requested a trade, was stripped of his captaincy, and began the regular season injured, he returned to the Detroit Red Wings' lineup Tuesday night with an epic performance.

It started with Larkin getting roundly booed when he hopped over the boards for his first shift of the season after all the controversy.

But the tide turned pretty quickly in the first period when Larkin scored his first goal of the year to put the Wings out in front of the Ottawa Senators 2-1.

Larkin got the Little Caesars Arena crowd going again at the end of the second period after he came to the defense of teammate Alex DeBrincat, who was hammered by the Senators' supreme pest Ridly Greig.

After all was said and done, Larkin had led the Wings to a 5-3 win, logging 20:41 of ice time, the highest of any Detroit forward. He finished with a goal, an assist, four shots on goal, a blocked shot, and won 11 of 17 face-offs (64.7%).

Not bad for a guy who doesn't want to be there.

And also for a guy who didn’t really have a training camp or any preseason games.

After the game, Larkin talked about the range of emotions, and the joy of 'being a hockey player' again, and battling on the ice for his teammates.

"We kinda showed what we can be as a team."

The big question, of course, is how long Larkin will continue to be a member of that team.

There's no indication that his trade request has been lifted. But you wouldn't know it from the way he competed with the Original Six team's jersey on in this one, while sticking up for his teammates as well.

As for the boos when he first took the ice? "I'm trying to be a man and face it... it was nice to be out there with the guys and get a win."
