Report: Stars Jason Robertson Could Delay $100M-Plus Deal

Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson may prefer to wait before signing an extension, according to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, who also wrote he does think Robertson wants to stay in Dallas.

LeBrun wrote that Robertson and his camp, led by agent Andy Scott, may prefer to wait until after the season to see more of the NHL market and more big contracts, though he called that his guess.

Why He May Wait

Robertson can’t sign a new deal until January under the CBA, and Stars GM Jim Nill hopes to get talks going again in mid- to late December, LeBrun wrote.

LeBrun said on TSN that Dallas will have to go above Mikko Rantanen’s $12 million a year, and that Robertson wouldn’t have any trade protection until a new deal kicks in July 1.

He added he doesn’t think a deal is reached by the end of January and that it will likely play out over the rest of the season.

Through 14 games this year, Robertson has five goals and 14 points.

The Contract Picture

Robertson is 27 and signed a one-year, $12 million deal in July to avoid arbitration, which makes him an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Earlier in the year, he rejected a Seattle sign-and-trade that included an eight-year, $125 million offer at a $15.625 million cap hit.

He had 45 goals and 96 points in 82 games last season, and 35 goals and 80 points in 82 games the season prior.

Over his eight-year career, the 27-year-old has a very impressive 218 goals and 504 points across 470 games played.

LeBrun also wrote Dallas hasn’t been involved in the Larkin market, saying the Stars have Robertson’s future to figure out first.
