The Washington Capitals had argued that Wilson had been committed to the hit while Vilmanis still had the puck and hadn't turned his back, and the hit occured within one second after the Panthers player got rid of it. But all that is under dispute by some when looking at a freeze frame just before the hit took place.
Vilmanis had to be helped off the ice.
