Raffi Torres of the Phoenix Coyotes was suspended 25 games for his hit that landed Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks on a stretcher. Duncan Keith only got 5 games for his flying elbow, which concussed Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks. James Neal only got one game for his headshot. Shea Weber got no suspension for his blow to the head of Henrik Zetterberg.

At first glance, it appears that star players in the NHL get preferential treatment when in comes to the discipline of illegal headshots. Keith, Neal, and Weber, get a far lighter suspension because they are stars, which bring in alot of revenue to the owners and league. Torres gets made an example of with a stiff suspension because he is not a star player.
Brendan Shanahan in a video addressing the lengthy suspension pointed out that Torres has five previous suspensions and a history of five identical hits to the head. He felt a message needed to be sent. The message is loud and clear to Raffi Torres who receives the longest suspension, dating back to 1989.
