Rumor: Buffalo to make big trade offer to the Maple Leafs

When two teams from the same division make a trade it always catches the media by a little bit of a surprise and this one would be no different. According to an NHL executive, the Sabres and Maple Leafs have chatted the parameters of a trade and will revisit talks once the trade freeze is lifted for playoff teams.

The trade would involve the Maple Leafs receiving Rasmus Ristolainen from the Sabres in exchange for Alexander Kerfoot and Andreas Johnsson. The deal would likely include a combination of draft picks going back and forth up the QEW.
These are two teams to watch for because they have what the other needs. It's not likely for two teams in the same division to make a deal, but it's certainly not completely out of the question. Look for the Sabres to push for Kasperi Kapanen, meanwhile Dubas has made it known to other teams he would like to keep the speedy Fin. The Maple Leafs have solid depth up front and a dire need for a RHD. The Sabres have a surplus of defencemen on their right-side and are desperate for some secondary scoring behind the disgruntled, Jack Eichel.

This could end up being the first big move for new Sabres gm, Kevyn Adams, who also happened to have played for the Maple Leafs during his career. Hard to say if these talks get rekindled because of the mass changes that happened in the Sabres' front office, however, if Kyle Dubas is serious about Ristolainen, a deal could be easily struck.

Keep an eye on these two teams once the playoffs are finished, as both teams look to make major changes heading into next season.
