Three Potential Landing Spots for Travis Hamonic

Travis Hamonic was the first player to opt-out of the NHL's Bubble Playoffs, and at this rate, he may be the last free-agent to sign a contract. The 30-year-old defenseman spent the last three seasons with the Calgary Flames and decided for his families sake, playing hockey during a pandemic was not something he was interested in. Next year, from all accounts, he should be back in the fold.

While that can certainly change, as Hamonic's families health will be at his forefront, and rightfully so, it does sound like he's interested in playing. While returning to Calgary may not be an option as the team looks to improve offensively, Hamonic will draw interest from a number of teams.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings are in desperate need of a physical right-handed defenseman, well let's be honest, they have several needs. Hamonic could use Detroit to propel himself into another long-term contract, and take a one-year deal. Detroit isn't expected to contend, but this could be a good spot for Hamonic to get more ice-time.

Los Angeles Kings

Behind Drew Doughty and Sean Walker, Hamonic could slide in nicely on the Kings' bottom-six. He also plays a much more physical game and would provide the Kings with some jam. Living and playing in LA isn't so bad either, and this could be another destination where Hamonic gets a 'show us' contract, that turns into something long-term.

New York Islanders

Hamonic spent seven seasons on Long Island and now that the team has let go Devon Toews to Colorado because of cap constraints, bringing in Hamonic on the cheap could be a reasonable replacement. The Islanders need another right-handed defenseman, and why not bring in someone you are familiar with.

The health of Travis Hamonic and his family will be the #1 priority for him, regardless where he plays. Because of this, and the uncertainty of how the next NHL season even looks like, it doesn't appear Hamonic is quite yet ready to commit to a team/city next season.

Once he's ready, the three teams mentioned are strong possibilities. Once the league has more concrete information regarding next season, expect Hamonic to sign on a dotted line somewhere.
