David Backes Appears Finished in Anaheim

David Backes of the Anaheim Ducks knows his career is coming to an end sooner than later. The 37-year-old recently admitted there's a really good chance he steps away from the rink after this season.

Backes is a pending unrestricted free-agent and it appears the Ducks will be heading in another direction as the team continues to get younger. This season the veteran forward has appeared in 14 games, recording only four points. He was traded to the Ducks from the Boston Bruins last season.

Backes recently spoke to the media regarding his career and had this to say about hanging them up:

Possibility, [but] I'd say it's more of a probability. But it's not a certainty. That's just kind of where I'm at. I've said it all year that every game you play in this League is a gift, every shift you play is a gift. … It's a great blessing to be able to play in this League. I've taken a bit of notes from guys before me that in the emotions and the grind of a season to make a concrete, hundred percent decision is a difficult process. No offense to Brett Favre because he had a great career, but he retired six or eight times and still came back. I think when I say 'that's enough,' I'd like it to be enough and not have to go back and forth. I certainly still have that passion. If I'm not playing, something in the game I guess wouldn't be out of the question.

Backes has played 964 career games, scoring 561 points. By the sounds of it, if he does retire, expect to see David Backes back in the NHL in some capacity sometime soon.
