Winnipeg Jets' Mark Scheifele Benched vs Maple Leafs

The Winnipeg Jets lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night and star center Mark Scheifele didn't play as much as he'd like. Jets head coach Paul Maurice benched Scheifele for a significant portion of the game, sending a message about his work ethic.

The play which pissed off his coach the most was when Scheifele decided to head to the bench instead of backchecking after his line mate Kyle Connor turned over the puck. The Leafs went down and scored their third goal of the night, and Scheifele was benched for 17 straight minutes.

Maurice didn't get too specific but had this to say after the game:

We have some things that we value as a group. Mark's a real competitive guy, and that gets the best of him sometimes, I think. We just need to adhere to our core values.

Here's the play that rattled Maurice enough to bench his best player in a playoff type of game. One things for sure, expect to see Mark Scheifele backchecking for the rest of the season and heading into the post season:
