3 Moves The Edmonton Oilers Need To Make This Summer

The Edmonton Oilers already finished their biggest task of the off-season when they re-signed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to an eight-year extension. However, there is still more work to be done if they hope to be real contenders moving forward. After being swept by the Winnipeg Jets this postseason, it is clear that changes are certainly needed.

Here are three moves they should make this off-season.

Trade Zack Kassian: Frank Seravalli recently stated that he believes teams are interested in trading for Zack Kassian. If true, this is something that the Oilers should absolutely consider. Kassian had a down year and carries a $3.2 million cap hit. By trading him, the Oilers would be able to gain cap space and could sign a third-line winger who can contribute far better offensively.

Buyout James Neal: James Neal is somebody who the Oilers should buyout this summer. His $5.75 million cap hit is ridiculously high for what he actually contributes. There have been rumors that this could come into fruition, and it would be best for the Oilers if it does. They would save almost $4 million over the next two seasons by doing this. This, in turn, would give them more money to bring in a better replacement for the middle-six.

Re-Sign Tyson Barrie And/Or Adam Larsson: The Oilers need to avoid losing both Tyson Barrie and Adam Larsson this off-season. Bringing back at least one of them should be a major priority, as losing two top-four, right-handed defensemen would be very detrimental. It has been noted that Barrie seems to be the player who is more likely to return, and that is not a bad thing at all. In 56 games this season, he had eight goals and a very impressive 48 points.
