San Jose Sharks: Best Addition And Worst Subtraction Of The Summer

Now that the off-season seems to be slowing down, we have a pretty good idea of every team's roster heading into this upcoming year. In this segment, we will be going over the best addition and worst subtraction for each of them. Something important to note is that players who were re-signed or given extensions will not be eligible for the "best addition" section. The same applies for draft picks from this year's NHL Entry Draft.

In this piece, we will be looking at the San Jose Sharks. For the most part, this has been a pretty tame off-season for the Sharks. None of their additions were necessarily big names and they did not lose too many players of real significance. It will be interesting to see how they end up performing this upcoming season. With the Pacific Division being a bit weak, they may be able to avoid the basement of it.

Best Addition: Nick Bonino C

The San Jose Sharks added a quality veteran in Nick Bonino. Although he is not a superstar, he is a solid two-way center who can be utilized on both the power play and penalty kill. In 55 games this past season with the Minnesota Wild, he scored 10 goals and recorded 26 points. If the Sharks keep Tomas Hertl for this season, Bonino will likely be slotted on the third-line. He's a great fit for that role and will help strengthen their depth at center.

Goaltender Adin Hill also could be a very nice addition if he's able to replicate his success last season to this one.

Worst Subtraction: Ryan Donato C/LW

At this point of the off-season, it seems unlikely that the Sharks will bring back Ryan Donato. They decided not to tender him a qualifying offer and he became an unrestricted free agent. He has yet to sign a deal with any NHL club, which is a little surprising. In 50 games last season, he scored six goals and recorded 20 points. That may not be the most production, but it is certainly acceptable for a third-liner.

Martin Jones is an honorable mention, but when looking at how bad his contract was and his significant struggles these last three seasons, it is for the best.
