Patrick Roy Vouches For Montreal Canadiens GM Job

In a move that would be complete full-circle, Montreal Canadiens great Patrick Roy has expressed interest in the vacant general manager position and has let ownership know, he wants the job.

The Hall of Fame netminder hasn't crossed paths much with the Canadiens since 1995 when Roy demanded a trade out of Montreal after being shelled at home. Roy met with the media in Quebec earlier this week and had this to say about the Canadiens having nothing to lose giving him a shot:

Since 1993, the team has been running in circles. What do they have to lose by giving me the chance to see what I can do with this club? At the same time, I understand the situation. The club is owned by Geoff Molson and he's the one pulling the strings. It's his team and at the end of the day I might not be the guy for him. I accept that. I was proud to wear that jersey, to win two Stanley Cups, play in three Finals. I have a lot of respect for that organization, a lot of admiration for what's been done in the history of the Canadiens. Of course, given the number of seasons I played with the Canadiens, the success that I had with the organization, would I be interested [in the general manager position]? Clearly. But at the same time I am aware that it's process and there are several good candidates.
I would be ready to work with [Gorton]. He seems to be a person that is passionate about hockey. I've always been a guy who loved working in teams

The Canadiens hired Jeff Gorton as the new executive vice president of hockey operations which basically means he will be the one signing off on all the transactions meanwhile the general manager who must be French speaking, will address the media on the day to day. Quite the interesting set up and ownership has now admitted the job was too much for one person to handle. They left Marc Bergevin out to dry, let's see if Patty Roy is next.
