NHL Rumors: Latest on Free Agent PK Subban

The PK Subban sweepstakes have been awfully quiet this summer as the veteran defenseman continues to sit without a contract for next season. Subban, now 33 years old, is looking to catch on with a contender in 2022-23, in hopes of competing for a Stanley Cup next spring. Here's three contenders who have been linked to the polarizing defenseman:

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers chatter has never been louder as several reports have surfaced out of Edmonton. With Tyson Barrie and Evan Bouchard already in place, Subban's fit may not be ideal. Regardless, there's been a ton of noise surrounding a potential deal and if so, look for it to be a one-year 'show me' contract that would eventual turn into a multi-year deal. For now, lots of noise and little movement out of Edmonton.

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers were thin on their blue line, then they went ahead and traded MacKenzie Weegar to the Calgary Flames. The Panther are currently over the salary cap and are certainly not done when it comes to making moves before day one of training camp. Subban is a prime candidate to join the Panthers on a one-year deal around $1 million. He recorded 22 points in 77 games last season with the Devils and could get back to being a more offensive threat with more time spent with the man advantage. A role he could fill on the second unit in Florida.

Chicago Blackhawks

Perhaps the favorite at this point should be the Chicago Blackhawks. They are ultra thin on the right-side of their blue line and management has shown it's all about the rebuild at this point. While they are nothing close to a contender, Subban may get the most money out of Chicago as they would likely be interested in a one-year contract so they can inflate Subban's numbers with lots of ice time, just in time for the trade deadline next season. It would be an interesting fit, however the Blackhawks should be considered a serious option at this point.
