Toronto Maple Leafs Rumors: Could Sandin Be on the Way Out

Jonas Siegel of The Athletic has brought forth the idea that the Toronto Maple Leafs could potentially move on from their young defenceman Rasmus Sandin. Lately, there have been rumors about the organization's lack of confidence and trust in him. Siegel also added that if Toronto does acquire another defenceman and elects to keep him, he may be the one on the outside looking in.

The expectation was that Sandin would be right up there in the lineup beside Timothy Liljegren, but it appears that he has fallen out of favour. As a result of that, it could mean that he may be moved at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline. But the question is, for what?

His contract of $1.4 million for the remainder of this year and next, makes him a player that teams could be interested in. With some more development, he could become an everyday top-four defenceman, for another team. With that being said, the Maple Leafs most likely won't trade Sandin, unless there is a deal in place which greatly improves the team, such as Ryan O'Reilly, or Timo Meier.

If the Maple Leafs do add another defenceman at the deadline, it may push Sandin down or even out of the lineup. However, he should still see game action. It would be smart for the team to use him as much as they can if he does come out of the lineup because it will other defenders to rest down the stretch for the playoffs.
