5 Best Signings Since The NHL Playoffs Started
Playoff teams aren't shy of signing players once playoffs start and teams that didn't make the playoffs have the time to get business done. There have been a total of 19 signings since the NHL playoffs started on April 19, and here are the five best ones.
Ty Emberson, April 19
The day the playoffs started, the Edmonton Oiler locked up their third pairing right defenseman Ty Emberson to a two-year, $1.3 million AAV deal. This is a good signing and the young d-man has been good for the Oilers in his first full season, playing 76 games while blocking 97 shots and delivering 125 hits. Though he hasn't played a big role in playoffs, Emberson has dressed for all seven of the Oilers' games and they have won five of them.
Taylor Hall, April 30
There was speculation as to whether Taylor Hall would sign and not many thought a deal would get done while the Carolina Hurricanes were waiting to start the second round. He was signed for three years at $3.167 million AAV. This is a great signing for the Hurricanes who have seen a career resurgence of sorts from Hall since they acquired him at the trade deadline. The veteran fits perfectly into the Hurricanes' system and scored eight goals and 16 points in his final 19 regular season games for his new team. Hall is currently playing on the third line, but should be considered a middle-6 winger who can finish on the power play.
Frederik Andersen, May 3
The Hurricanes were quick to follow that great signing up with another one after seeing what Frederik Andersen means to their team. The veteran has proven to be an elite starter if he can stay healthy, but health has been the problem. He was named the Game 1 starter and the Hurricanes haven't questioned their decision. Over his four seasons with Carolina, he has posted a 2.27 GAA, .915 SV%, and nine shutouts while putting up slightly better numbers than that come playoff time. The Hurricanes signed Andersen for one year at $2.75 million.
Matthew Coronato, May 3
The biggest signing since playoffs started was by Matthew Coronato. The Calgary Flames inked him to a seven-year, $6.5 million AAV deal. He just scored 24 goals and 47 points in 77 games as a 22-year-old in his first full season. This is a good signing as the former first round pick by the Flames has really taken positive strides and is already a key contributor on a team that is going through a retooling. Expect this deal to start to look very good soon.
Nikolas Matinpalo, May 5
One of the most recent signings in the NHL was by the Ottawa Senators as they got a deal done with defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo. He signed for two years at $875,000 AAV. He is a 26-year-old rookie who got into 41 games for the Senators this season. He doesn't stand out and didn't play a ton, but is a good piece to have as proven this season. He played in all six playoff games this season and had a bit of an increased role in the postseason compared to the regular season.
