New Jersey Devils Make Changes to Coaching Staff
New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald wasn't happy with how things played out this season for his hockey team, so changes have begun already, starting with behind the bench.
The Devils announced a slew of moves to their coaching staffs at both the NHL and AHL level. Assistant coaches Ryan McGill and Chris Taylor will not have their contracts renewed for the 2025-26 campaign. The team also announced that head video coach Jerry Dineen will not return next season. Comets’ assistant coach David Cunniff’s contract will also not be renewed.
The team stated the search for replacements has begun immediately, meanwhile, head coach Sheldon Keefe's job is safe, as the Devils' bench boss admitted he's not here to be average and thinks the team has it in them to make a deep playoff run in the very near future.
The Devils went 42-33-7 on the season, good for 91 points, third in the Metropolitan Division. Their struggles at home is something that will be discussed this summer, as they went just 19-17-5 on the year, which simply isn't good enough for a team so talented.
New Jersey was eliminated in five games thanks to the Carolina Hurricanes, and now go back to the drawing board, for both their coaching staffs, but also the roster. Fitzgerald wants to overhaul several areas of his team, and with all the rumors about Quinn Hughes in Vancouver, it makes you wonder if there's a blockbuster deal coming at the NHL Draft in June.
For now, the interviews have begun for their coaching vacancies.
