NHL News: Senators & Claude Giroux Talking Potential New Contract
The Ottawa Senators are entering the offseason with multiple pending free agents, but forward Claude Giroux is undoubtedly their most notable one.
According to Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch, the Senators and Giroux have started having "informal talks" about a new potential contract extension. In addition, Garrioch shared that Senators general manager Steve Staios and Giroux's agent, Pat Brisson, are expected to meet soon to have further extension talks.
Hearing that the Senators are interested in keeping Giroux around is not surprising in the slightest. The veteran forward is a very important part of their roster, as he provides solid offense and is a great leader in the room. Thus, it would be significant if the Senators were able to keep him around as they look to continue to head in the right direction.
Giroux appeared in 81 games this season with the Senators, where he posted 15 goals, 50 points, 64 hits, and a minus-8 rating. This is after he had 21 goals and 64 points in 82 games with the Sens during the 2023-24 campaign.
Getting Giroux signed would certainly be good for the Senators, as the 37-year-old showed this season that he can still be an impactful player. It will be fascinating to see if talks between the Sens and Giroux lead to a new contract from here.
