NHL Trade Rumors: Senators & Flyers Becoming Trade Partners

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen skates during 2024 game.

With veteran Nick Jensen recovering from surgery and unlikely to be ready for training camp, the Ottawa Senators are hunting for a right-shot defenseman to strengthen their blueline ahead of the 2025-26 season.

GM Steve Staios confirmed the club would adjust accordingly after learning the full extent of Jensen’s lower-body injury, which is believed to be related to his hip or knee.

Senators Target Ristolainen as Search for Right-Shot Defenseman Heats Up

Among the names surfacing in Ottawa's search is Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. As reported by Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the Senators are weighing a potential trade for the 30-year-old, who has two years remaining on a $5.1 million AAV deal.

Ristolainen has drawn trade interest before—most notably from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the deadline—but the Flyers have remained firm in their asking price.

“Everybody is looking for that kind of defenceman,” one league executive told Postmedia. “If you have them, you want to keep them, and if you’re looking for one, they’re hard to find.”

The Senators are exploring several options in the free agent market, however, with cap constraints and the high price tags attached to those names, Ristolainen could be the most attainable target. With Ottawa looking to build on their first playoff appearance in eight years, landing a stable, physical presence like Ristolainen could be a key move for their defensive corps.
