NHL Trade Rumors: 2 Teams Make Trade Offers to Islanders for Mat Barzal

The New York Islanders have had themselves quite the NHL Draft weekend. Three first-round pick selections, including stud defenceman and #1 overall selection Matthew Schaefer, meanwhile the team traded their best defenceman in Noah Dobson to the Montreal Canadiens. Sounds like new GM Mathieu Darche may not be finished.

Mat Barzal is a name that's made its rounds on the trade market the past few weeks, as he's been inconsistent the last few seasons with his production. Barzal is owed $9.1 million AAV through the 2030-31 season, and holds a 22-team no-trade clause. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Vancouver Canucks and Utah Mammoth have been in contact with Darche, meanwhile to this point, no talks have seemed to advance.

As I reported earlier today, some teams have called Darche about centre Mathew Barzal, with Utah and the Vancouver Canucks being two of them. I do not get the sense the Islanders are overly interested in moving Barzal, but that hasn’t stopped teams from calling. ‘Tis the season, after all.

Barzal recorded six goals and 20 points in 30 games last season, meanwhile posted 80 points in 80 games the year before. In 530 career NHL games, Barzal has registered 462 points, and has also chipped in during then Stanley Cup Playoffs with 45 points in 60 postseason games.

The Canucks want to make a splash up front, and have the future of Quinn Hughes to worry about as well. They could be up to something big as Brock Boeser is leaving, and they'll have some big holes to fill up front next season.
