Oilers Working On Contract Extension With Forward
The Edmonton Oilers appear to be working on a contract extension with forward Trent Frederic, who the team acquired this season ahead of the trade deadline. He only played one game for the Oilers during the regular season after being acquired and it took him a little bit to get up to speed in the playoffs.
There has been some criticism towards his game in the playoffs and he has only contributed one goal and four points in 18 playoff games. He's played every game for the Oilers on this playoff run too and is on the third line with Zach Hyman out. Frederic is only averaging 11:32 per game and doesn't get any special teams time.
On 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Elliotte Friedman said that "one of the things that's being rumored around here is that Trent Frederic might be sticking around." His trade acquisition was definitely questioned and he has to show up in the playoffs. The other moves made by Stan Bowman have worked out very well and the Oilers don't have a ton of cap space to work with for next year with having to extend Evan Bouchard as well.
The expectation is that after only producing eight goals and 15 points in 58 games, the Oilers will be able to sign him for less. If he wants to win, there is no better place to be than a team that has gone to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals.
Frederic should be a third line player and he is relatively young compared to many of the veterans the Oilers have brought in over the past 1-2 years. If he is signed to a fair price, it won't be a bad contract. And if he can get back to the player he was on the Boston Bruins the two prior seasons, then it will work out very well for Edmonton.
