NHL Rumors: Central Division Team Expected To Be In Big On Nikolaj Ehlers

The Utah Mammoth are wasting no time chasing star power as they look to fast-track their path to contention.

With over $20 million in cap space and a mandate from owners Ryan and Ashley Smith to build a winner fast, Utah is expected to make an aggressive push for Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers, according to multiple reports, including The Athletic’s James Mirtle

Ehlers, one of the top forwards hitting free agency this summer, is drawing widespread interest, but Utah may be ready to offer both the ice time and contract he’s long deserved.

A Perfect Fit for Utah's Offensive Core

Ehlers, 29, has battled through inconsistent usage and injuries in Winnipeg yet still produced 63 points in 69 games last season, and over a point-per-game pace in multiple years prior. Despite being one of the Winnipeg Jets’ most efficient players at even strength, he often found himself playing under 16 minutes per night.

In Utah, that would change. The Mammoth envision Ehlers on a top line with Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley, where his speed and shot could thrive in a featured role. At an expected $8.1 million AAV over six years, he fits Utah’s budget and timeline.

Mammoth Building a Contender, Not a Rebuild

While most expansion teams start slow, Utah isn’t settling for baby steps. The Mammoth have a competitive young roster, a draft pick (No. 4 overall) they may trade for veteran help, and now appear ready to swing big in free agency.

Mitch Marner has also been linked to Utah, but if the price climbs too high, Ehlers may be the marquee addition.
