NHL Free Agency: Panthers GM Sends Bold Message On Florida's UFAs

Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito and head coach Paul Maurice talk to media during 2025 Stanley Cup Finals.

Florida Panthers GM Bill Zito isn't backing down from a challenge, especially not after winning back-to-back Stanley Cups.

With three key players, Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Aaron Ekblad, set to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1, Zito is embracing the pressure with confidence. “We’re going to spend it all,” he told The Pat McAfee Show, making it clear that ownership is willing to push the limits to keep their championship core together.

Bennett, Marchand, Ekblad Face Uncertain but Hopeful Future

All signs point to mutual interest between the Panthers and their free agents. Bennett, fresh off a Conn Smythe-winning playoff run, called Florida his “home” and expressed gratitude for how the 2021 trade revitalized his career.

Marchand, who scored six goals in the Cup Final, hinted at tax advantages being a factor in his decision, but has shown real interest in extending in Florida.

Ekblad, a Panthers lifer and former 1st overall pick, stated, “I sure hope not,” when asked if Game 6 was his last as a Panther, suggesting he’s not ready to leave either.

Panthers Betting Big on a Dynasty Run

The Panthers have roughly $19 million in cap space to make it all work, and Zito believes they can pull it off. He's tight-lipped on whether “hometown discounts” will be necessary but dropped a playful hint when asked how badly he wanted Marchand to stay: “I bought a Dairy Queen.”
