Montreal Canadiens re-sign Jakub Dobes to multi-year deal

The Montreal Canadiens announced on Sunday they've re-signed goaltender Jakub Dobes to a two-year contract, worth $965,000 AAV.

The 24-year-old netminder burst onto the scene last season in Montreal, registering a 7-4-3 record, while also appearing in three Stanley Cup Playoff games. The former fifth-round pick posted a .909 save percentage throughout his first taste of NHL action, and should push starter Samuel Montembeault for minutes next season. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound netminder ranked fourth in wins among NHL rookie goaltenders and was one of five first-year goaltenders to earn a shutout.

Dobes started the 2024-25 season with the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League, and recorded a shutout in his first career NHL game against the Florida Panthers on December 28, 2024. The Ostrava, CZE native earned his first career playoff win on April 25 against the Washington Capitals.

The Canadiens are on the up and up. They will be pushing once again to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and are surely going to be one of the most exciting teams in hockey to follow. There's a lot to like about the makeup of their roster, with some veterans throughout, and a slew of young core players who GM Kent Hughes is going to build around. Dobes appears to be in that mix.

The Canadiens have also brought in 28-year-old Kaapo Kahkonen on a one-year deal worth $1.1 million. So Dobes is going to have some competition for the backup role, however, with his great showing last season, there's plenty to build off of for the young goaltender.
