NHL Trade Rumors: Blues & Sabres Discussing Multi-Player Trade
The NHL's trade market has been somewhat quiet so far this offseason, as most of the headlines have been made by the free-agent market. From big contracts being handed out, to some really bad ones, mostly in Los Angeles, there's been no shortage of entertainment so far this offseason. The St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres could be next up for a major trade.
According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Blues and Sabres have discussed a deal centered around defenceman Bowen Byram. There's reportedly also been interest from the Canucks, Sharks Flames and Maple Leafs, but so far no deal appears imminent.
Sabres GM Kevyn Adams told reporters on Wednesday that he is “absolutely” prepared if Byram were to sign an offer sheet with another club and does not view that as a concern. “We’ll be matching and have the opportunity to have a player under contract who we think helps our team win,” he said.
The Blues created up a good chunk of cap space by purposely losing Leddy to waivers, and have a $6.5 million cushion in Torey Krug, who will not be able to play again and can be placed on LTIR, freeing up overage space.
It is believed the Blues are among the frontrunners for Byram, and baring a change, the Sharks appear to be on the outside looking in. At least one other club is evaluating the prospect of presenting Byram with an offer sheet.
Keep an eye on the Blues, Sharks and Sabres, it appears at this point it's a two-headed race to land Byram, with the sense Buffalo is open to making the move, and trade away from their crowded blueline.
