3 Worst RFA Signings This Offseason
There have been some good and not so good RFA signings this offseason already, but we are here to look at the ones where it appears teams overpaid to bring their youngish players back.
Martin Pospisil, Calgary Flames
Martin Pospisil wasn't an offensive player in the AHL and he won't be anything more than a third liner at best in the NHL. For the Calgary Flames, he is on their fourth line and somehow gets time on the second unit power play. He scored just four goals and 25 points last season and the Flames extended him for three more years at $2.5 million AAV after he is making $1 million AAV on his current contract. This is an overpayment and even though there is plenty of money to go around, he didn't need as big of a pay bump with that term.
Conor Timmins, Buffalo Sabres
Conor Timmins has not been a full time NHL player yet in his career. He just played 68 games last season, but that is his most. He also logs third pairing minutes at best and won't go too high, especially not this coming season with the talent of the Buffalo Sabres' other five d-men. The Sabres don't have infinite money to spend and they are going to need some next season to extend some other, more important RFAs and UFAs, but the team handed over $2.2 million per year for two years to Timmins to play as a 6th/7th defenseman. The Sabres have Jacob Bryson, Zach Jones, Ryan Johnson, and Jack Rathbone all in the mix for an NHL role too.
Jack McBain, Utah Mammoth
The Utah Mammoth must've seen something in Jack McBain that I didn't because after three consecutive seasons of playing a bottom-6 role, scoring 8-13 goals, and 26-27 points, the team decided to give him a five-year contract with an AAV of $4.25 million. This looks like the worst of the three and of the offseason so far as not only is it an overpayment for what he has done, it is too long at this AAV and Utah has to deal with free agents after next season with somewhat limited money. This contract could look pretty bad right off the bat.
