Stars Rumors: Dallas Went After Major Player & Would've Had To Move Robertson
After losing in the conference finals in three consecutive seasons and looking for another Stanley Cup, the Dallas Stars were and still are looking to make big changes to reach their goal. They were able to keep some of their free agents with team-friendly deals, but also lost key players as well.
There is no cap space to continue making additions, but the team looks pretty solid right now. What they are still looking for is a right-shot defenseman to play the right side, but just this summer, the team supposedly showed interest in Mitch Marner.
According to Sean Shapiro, "we know Dallas had kicked around the idea of going after Mitch Marner. If they were going to get Marner, that amount of money...would have had to come from somewhere." He also added, "yes, the Stars did look at what a return could be on Jason Robertson. It was always going to be a roster player or part of some other bigger move."
There have been plenty of rumors surrounding Robertson this offseason involving the Calgary Flames, who are looking for a star and also seem to be moving on from Rasmus Andersson, who fits perfectly into the needs of Dallas. Marner would have been an interesting play for Dallas. He ended up on the Vegas Golden Knights and they didn't have to pay nearly as much as Robertson's value to get the upcoming UFA at the time, but Robertson would have still had to go. It would have had to be another team quickly to not go too far over the cap.
I believe the Stars did the right move holding onto Robertson as swapping him for Marner isn't the right move. It isn't going to get much easier for the Stars money-wise unless Tyler Seguin is bought out next offseason. Robertson isn't safe from a move and he is going into the final season under contract at $7.75 million AAV before becoming a RFA for the last time.
