Sharks Acquire Carey Price's Contract From Canadiens

Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens
There have been rumors swirling that the San Jose Sharks, with all of their cap space, would be the team that acquires Carey Price's contract from the Montreal Canadiens. That has turned out to be true as it was announced the Sharks are acquiring Price's contract and a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for defenseman Gannon Laroque.

Frank Seravalli added that "Montreal will (hopefully) not operate in LTIR to open the season after paying Price's signing bonus. San Jose has cap floor flexibility if they end up trading away players." That means the Sharks have the space to now make a trade, potentially Mario Ferraro, earlier than expected, while nothing does have to happen until mid-season either.

David Pagnotta noted that the trade gives the Canadiens just over $4.56 million in cap space while the Sharks still have just over $9.2 million in cap space to work with. This could open up trades for both in different directions, not just the Sharks in terms of moving off of players.

The Canadiens are looking to build off of last season and opening up the cap space they did for now and for the deadline is a great move for merely a fifth-round pick. Montreal still has two second-round picks, two fourth-round picks, and two seventh-round picks, along with a first, third, and a sixth in next year's draft.

Price has one year left on his deal and he is already seemingly retired since last playing in the NHL in 2021-22 for just five games.
