NHL Rumors: Sharks Have Multiple Trade Candidates But One Wants To Stay

The San Jose Sharks enter the season with a staggering 10 pending unrestricted free agents, setting the stage for another potentially busy trade deadline.

But unlike recent years, GM Mike Grier insists he isn’t looking to ship everyone out.

“I don’t want to keep tearing the roster down year after year,” Grier said. “Some of these guys, if they play well, they like it here, and they’re a good fit with our group. I’m definitely open to bringing some of those guys back and extending them.”

One of those players is Alexander Wennberg, who has made it clear he wouldn’t mind staying in San Jose. The 31-year-old center is entering the final year of his two-year, $10 million contract, having posted 35 points in 77 games last season while taking on tougher defensive assignments after Mikael Granlund was dealt to the Dallas Stars

Wennberg has embraced a leadership role, saying he was brought in to mentor the younger core while competing hard every night.

Still, the writing may be on the wall with the Sharks’ youth movement in full swing. No. 2 overall pick Michael Misa is pushing for an NHL spot, while rookie standout Will Smith and prospect Filip Bystedt are waiting in the wings.

Wennberg has been through this before, having been dealt at the 2024 deadline from Seattle to the New York Rangers. If San Jose slips out of contention, he could be on the move again.

For now, though, both sides seem open to the idea of extending his stay. “I’ve had a great time here,” Wennberg said. “It’s a great organization, and my family has enjoyed it too. We’ll see how it goes.”
