Breaking: Avalanche Agree to Massive Martin Necas Extension
The Colorado Avalanche have locked up Martin Necas for the long term, agreeing on an eight year, $92 million deal at a whopping $11.5 million AAV.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the contract is front-loaded with $60M in signing bonuses, and includes a full no-move clause for the first 7 years of the deal.
It brings to an end, essentially, the long, drawn-out affair that began with the Avs’ sudden, shocking trade of superstar Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for Necas last season, when they were hesitant to give Rantanen an extension in the $12M+ AAV range.
Now they have Necas locked up for close to that amount.

Necas is off to a tremendous start this season with Colorado, with seven goals and 13 points in 11 games. He has firmly established himself with the Avalanche as a viable top-line player alongside Nathan MacKinnon.
There is talk around the sport that Logan Cooley’s $10 million AAV extension signed on Wednesday with the Utah Mammoth was a big factor in getting Necas & the Avs to come to terms on Thursday.
Necas now joins the likes of Kirill Kaprizov, Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Kyle Connor who have signed extensions that have taken them off the board as potential UFAs next summer.
The 26-year-old former Carolina Hurricane is wrapping up a two-year, $6.5 million AAV deal this season, that was signed with the Canes in the summer of 2024.
