Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz injured vs. Red Wings

The Toronto Maple Leafs blew a 2-0 lead against the dismal Detroit Red Wings, and it wasn't the only tough news on the night. Forward Steven Lorentz left the game and did not return.

Lorentz departed thanks to an upper-body injury and the team mentioned he'll be reevaluated on Sunday and the timeline will go from there on his return to the lineup. Lorentz had himself a great training camp and solidified his spot on the Leafs' fourth line and penalty kill.

Lorentz played just three shifts in the first period and finished the night with just 1:17 of ice time. He was hurt on a play that saw Red Wings' defenceman Ben Chiarot lay a bone-crushing hit on Toronto's fourth-line winger.

Lorentz had a great first game for the Leafs in their season opener, collecting two assists and playing great defensively. Last season he scored eight goals, five of them game winners, and added 11 assists. He's a major part of Toronto's bottom six and now the team awaits the word on the severity of the injury.

While Lorentz can't play, expect to see top prospect Easton Cowan finally get a crack at the regular season lineup after being called up before the opener and sitting in the press box during the Leafs' first two games.

Toronto is back at it against the Red Wings in an afternoon affair on Monday. The team moved the game time up to 2pm thanks to the Toronto Blue Jays hosting game 2 of the ALCS at 5pm.
